August 21 & 22, 2011

Monday we took 14 salmon for limits, 25" to 22#.
The water from Tomales Point down had gone clear, and I was running, looking for a patch of brown water to fish the edge of, 'been a good pattern for me lately.
Saw a skiff hooked up on a big fish, turned around and metered over the reef. Clear water, no bait, one fish mark. Put in at the end of McLure's and trolled along the edge of the rocks with baits at 30' and 40'. Metered what looked like a school of the big black rockfish that used to live here, small cluster of big marks.
Then they bit. One line after another popped off the wires after a single pump, peeling off in four different directions. Two of the fish jumped almost in sync off either quarter and ran toward the boat., two went deep. I steered through the other trollers and set the pilot, cleared lines and netted three of those, reset the lines for another pass and hooked five, landing three. The third pass we hooked and landed three nicer fish, 12 to 22 lbs.

After that each short tack produced just one or two 'til the tags were used up. The fish were beauties, in peak condition. They each fought way above their weight.
I had time for a photo as Isaac Butcher brought in the last one.

Sunday we went out with just four anglers. We took 7 salmon trolling  shallow waters next to the cliffs and offshore rocks north of Bodega Bay.
Julia McCann with our first fish of the day, a brute that she brought to the net with an assist from her husband Dennis.

These are the good ol' days
