Bodega Bay Fish Log

August 27, 2009

after an emergency leave of several weeks, I took Miss Anita offshore this morning with 5 passengers for 11 albacore, 12 to 18 lbs.
 we fished 25 to 40 nm SW of Bodega, 38 09 X123 37 to 38 02 to 123 50, a scratch bite over a wide area for us.

We made our second albacore trip of the season today. Four passengers  took 6 albies from 12 to 32 lbs.
We ran 30 nm SSW to the edge of the shelf, about 5 nm south of Cordell Banks, where we found the 60 degree, blue water we were looking for at 37 50 N X 123 25 W.
There was just a scratch troll bite in the morning, nothing in the afternoon, but the area looks promising and we'll be back out there Thursday and then Sunday and Tuesday after that.

I had to disappoint  Tom Haines' charter this morning with the news that it was too rough offshore to chase albacore this morning.
We took them on a pot-luck trip instead, trolling along Ten Mile Beach for one 12 lb halibut (and one that got away), and one incidental 25 lb salmon (released), after which we switched to swimbaits for 3 keeper lings and some nice black, brown, and vermillion rockfish in 100' water near Pt. Reyes.
We still have albacore trips scheduled Tuesday and Thursday this week, with 3 seats open Tue and one left Thu. The forecast looks good and we're eager to get in on the next bite offshore. Cal if you'd like to join us, 707 875 FISH.

Tom Haines' group from Truckee chartered Miss Anita for rockfish today and for albacore on Sunday, weather permitting.
We had great weather this morning but found a very slow bite on the local reefs. After a few stops off of Salmon Creek and Fort Ross we ran up above Salt Point to Fisk Mill Cove. The bite was a little better there, and we took limits of mixed rockfish and two lingcod on long, slow drifts from 100' in to the kelp line with baited flies.

Thursday we made our first tuna trip of the year, and hopefully the first of many this season.
Sport boats fishing the big plume of 60 degree water that's pushing up along the shelf between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay reported good numbers of fish when they could get out and we couldn't resist heading down to catch a few ourselves when the NW wind stopped blowing.
The ocean was calm as we left the harbor at 05:30 and ran south, heading for the Gumdrop Seamount, 50 nm from Bodega Bay.
We'll be scheduling albacore trips on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays through September.

We had a great morning fishing up the coast today with Miss Anita regular Tim Foley, and Bruce Longstreth, from Stockton, who brought his grandsons Austin & Andrew Rappuhn, visiting from Alabama. My son Aaron came out to catch dinner also.
